Foot size doesn’t matter

Let me give you another phrase from the movie Frozen.

Kristoff is shocked when he finds out that Anna has gotten engaged to someone she just met. He asks a lot of questions about that guy; his name, favorite food, even foot size. And Anna says, “Foot size doesn’t matter.”

Let’s focus on the word “matter”, which is a verb in this case.

If something matters, it’s important. If something matters to you, it’s important for you. So, foot size doesn’t matter means foot size is not important.

Let’s say you are five minutes late. It doesn’t sound very important. Maybe not. But in some cases, five minutes do matter. You could miss your flight. You could miss your job opportunity. Then it does matter, doesn’t it?

今回も、映画「アナと雪の女王」からフレーズをご紹介します。

クリストフはアナが出会ったばかりの人と婚約したと聞いて仰天します。そして相手について質問しまくります。姓は？ 好きな食べ物は？ 足のサイズは？ アナは言います。「足の大きさなんてどうでもいいでしょ！」 英語では Foot size doesn’t matter です。

今日はこの matter という単語に注目します。ここで使われている matter は動詞です。

もし something matters（主語がsomethingなので三人称単数現在の「s」を付けます）なら、この something は「重要」です。もし something matters to you なら、「あなたにとって重要」です。Foot size doesn’t matter はしたがって、「足の大きさは重要な問題ではない」、「足の大きさなんてどうでもよい」という意味になります。

たとえば、約束の時間に5分遅れてしまいました。5分なんてたいした時間じゃないよね。確かに。でも！ 場合によってはこの5分が命取りになることも。5分遅れたがために「飛行機に乗り遅れる」かもしれません。あるいは「もらえる仕事がもらえなくなる」かもしれません。そうなると、5分は重要ですよね。Five minutes do matter です。
