for the first time in a long time

US President Donald Trump used an interesting phrase in his recent tweet when he said he had watched low-rated Morning Joe for the first time in a long time.

When someone says “for the first time in a long time”, it doesn’t mean “for the first time ever”. For example, you’re eating sushi right now. This is not your first time. But you haven’t eaten sushi for a long time. You’re eating sushi for the first time in a long time. If you want to be a little more specific, you can say you’re eating sushi for the first time in five years, or in ten years, instead of in a long time.

Last night I watched an old movie. It’s my favorite but I hadn’t seen it for a long time. I couldn’t remember when the last time I saw it was. In other words, I watched the movie for the first time in a long time.

久しぶり

米国大統領のドナルド・トランプさんが最近のツイートでおもしろいフレーズを使っていました。「視聴率の低いモーニングジョーを見た」というツイートだったのですが、このとき for the first time in a long time というフレーズを使っていたのです。

for the first time in a long time は、for the first time、つまり「初めて」とは違います。例えば、いま現在、あなたはお寿司を食べています。初めての体験ではありません。でも、随分長いことお寿司を食べていませんでした。これを英語では I am eating sushi for the first time in a long time と表現するのですが、これで「久しぶりに」お寿司を食べている、という意味になるのです。もうちょっと具体的に言いたいなら、in a long time の代わりに in five years とか in ten years とします。これで「5年ぶりに」とか「10年ぶりに」という意味になります。

昨夜、古い映画を見ました。お気に入りの作品なのですが、もう随分長いこと見ていませんでした。最後に見たのはいつだっただろう？ これをさきほどのフレーズで表現すると、I watched the movie for the first time in a long time、「その映画を久しぶりに見た」となるわけです。
