What is a virus?

For the past few weeks, the biggest news hitting the headlines in Japan, and around the globe, is a novel coronavirus.

Now, let’s look at the word “virus”. I know what it means, how the word is used and pronounced. But I’m not sure if I can explain what a virus exactly is. So, I looked it up in a dictionary.

Macmillan says a virus is: a simple living thing that is smaller than bacteria and that can enter your body and make you sick. If your body can protect itself against a particular virus, then you are immune to it. A vaccine is a medicine that makes you immune to a particular virus.

ウィルスって何？

ここ数週間、日本で、そして世界中で、もっとも世間を賑わしているニュースと言えば、やはり新型コロナウィルスのニュースでしょう。

そこで今日は、この「ウィルス」という言葉に注目してみました。英語では「ヴァイラス」です。意味も分かるし、使い方も分かるし、発音も分かります。でも、ウィルスって何？と聞かれても、ちゃんと答えられる自信はちょっとない。そういうときは辞書を引くにかぎります。

マクミランの定義はこうです。「単純な生物。バクテリアより小さくて、あなたの身体に入り込み、そのせいであなたは病気になります。あなたの体が特定のウィルスから自身を守ることができるなら、あなたの体はそのウィルスに対して免疫があります。ワクチンは特定のウィルスに対して免疫をつくる薬です」
