They are at it again

President Donald Trump used an interesting phrase in his recent tweet, when he said “the Fake News is at it again“.

Now, what does that mean when you’re said to “be at it again“? If you are at it again, you’re doing something which you’ve done before, and which is neither agreeable nor acceptable.

For example, you and your little brother are fighting, and your mother may say, “Are you at it again? Why can’t you be nice to each other?” Now their mother’s complaining. Actually she can complain just about anything. So now it’s the boys’ turn to say, “Oh, well, Mom is at it again”.

Going back to Mr. Trump, he is constantly criticizing the mainstream media such as CNN and The New York Times. So when he said “the Fake News is at it again”, I thought “HE is at it again”.

またやってるよ

トランプ大統領が最近のツイートでおもしろいフレーズを使っていました。”The Fake News is at it again” の “be at it again” です。

どういう意味でしょう。あまり好ましくない行い、許容できない行いを繰り返しやる人が、そのような行いをまたまた始めたとします。日本語では「またやってるよ」とか「いつものが始まった」みたいに言いますが、英語ではしばしばこの be at it again で表現します。

例えば、お兄ちゃんと弟が兄弟げんかを始めたとします。お母さんはこう言うかもしれない。Are you at it again? Why can’t you be nice to each other? これで「またやってるの？ どうして仲良くできないの？」という意味になります。さて、今度はお母さんが愚痴をこぼし始めました。お母さんにとって愚痴の種は尽きません。そこで今度は兄弟たちのリベンジです。Oh, well, Mom is at it again.「やれやれ。また愚痴が始まった」という意味です。

トランプ大統領の話に戻りますが、彼はいつもいつも CNN やニューヨークタイムズ紙など、大手メディアの批判ばかりしています。なので、彼が「偽ニュースがまたやってるよ」と言ったとき、思わず「いや、それはあーたでしょ」と突っ込んでしまいました。
